We have a blog!

Happy Fall from the Wellesley College Choir! The semester is already half-way over and flying by, and we’re busy rehearsing for our annual Dober concert (read on for more info). Dober will be our fifth performance of the semester after kick-starting the year with participation in various campus events and Wellesley traditions. Our first week back from break, we reunited to sing the Alma Mater at Convocation, followed soon after by a memorial service for 9/11 hosted by Religious Life, Flower Sunday, and our annual Friends and Family Weekend concert.

In the middle of our beginning-of-the-year rush, we welcomed 20 new choirbees to our ranks, bringing our membership to 59 total. We got to know our new members at the annual retreat, complete with singing, sandwiches, and name games. Look for pictures from retreat and other events below!

This year we have many exciting events lined up. The Dober Memorial Concert, November 12th at 8:00 PM in Houghton Chapel, will be Dr. Graham’s 10th year anniversary as the Evelyn Barry Director of Choral Music. The program, Remembrance, will feature selections from Anne Frank: A Living Voice sung by the Chamber Singers, as well as other pieces commemorating the lives lost in WWII. The choir has a great repertoire including music by Abbie Betinis, David MacIntyre, Ola Gjeilo, and Eleanor Daley. The songs are really coming along in rehearsal, and we’re very excited to share our semester’s work with the community! We hope to see many friendly faces at the concert, especially lots of choir alumnae from the span of Dr. Graham’s tenure. If you are an alum who plans to attend, please send us an email at wccblog@gmail.com so we can include you in the count.

Beyond Dober, we’ll be singing at Christmas Vespers on December 4th, and the annual Baum concert on March 31st. This year at Baum, we will be collaborating with the Cornell Glee Club on Rachmaninoff’s Vespers. Additionally, we are very excited to be planning our wintersession tour to Portugal!

As always, our international tour year arrives with a great fundraising effort ahead. Our fundraising committee has been busy planning, and we have some great opportunities for our supporters to contribute to the choir. We are currently selling raffle tickets for a grand prize of Patriots’ tickets for the Dec. 4th game, with runner-up prizes including gift cards to Lemon Thai, Wasik’s cheese shop, and Café Mangal. The drawing will be at the Dober concert, but you don’t need to be present to win. Our next fundraiser will be an online auction with great items contributed by every choirbee, which will open at Dober and close at Vespers. Stay tuned for more information! We also have our new cd that came out last year, Lyrics to Live By, which will be for sale at every concert or by email order.

We will be updating our blog throughout the semester, keeping you informed of all the choir goings-on at rehearsals (our Halloween party is next week!), as well as announcements regarding our fundraisers and concerts. If you would like to buy cd’s, raffle tickets, contribute an item to our online auction, or are looking for more information about choir events, you can email us at wcchoirblog@gmail.com. If you are an alum, we would love to hear your fond choir memories and what you’re up to now! Feel free to post in the comments below or send us an email, and don’t forget to let us know if you’re attending Dober!
